Livingness as a material quality in Moss

Project Info:

In this research project, we've investigated moss, not just as a material, but as a living entity. We explored what it could mean to design with living material, by various experiments involving living with moss. With a combination of user test, diaries and our own test, we've gathered insights in working with moss as a living material. I've created moss carries, made with a rough surface containing 40% wood (3D printed) as a growing medium for moss. These carriers have been used for our user test, to take the moss with you and build a connection. Furthermore, we've explored designing for a living entity, other then human beings, being moss in this instance. Based on our tests comparing multiple moss species in different habitats, we've created various habitats, from a simple carrier that can be placed in a humid environment such as a bathroom, to a more complex model which automatically humidifies the moss.
